Walmart's Jobs and Opportunity Zone (JOZ) Partnership Program
In April 2006, Walmart Stores, Inc. announced its Jobs and Opportunity Zones (JOZ) program as a reflection of the company's commitment to making unique and sustainable contributions to the communities where it operates. To offer an even greater economic boost to these communities, the company has partnered with the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, among other chambers, business groups, and development institutions to support local business development. Under the JOZ Program, the Chamber received a grant to provide advertisements for five businesses in the District's Ward 5. The Chamber and the Office of Ward 5 D.C. Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. selected the five businesses based on the following criteria: 1) it is independently owned and operated, 2) it meets the small business "size standards" as established by the Small Business Administration, and 3) it is not a franchise. Additionally, the Ward 5 Councilmember Office helped select the minority businesses based on their contributions to the community, i.e., they hire from or live within the community and are what is considered community partners. All have volunteered their services and/or expertise to DC's Ward 5. The Councilmember's Office, through the partnership between Walmart and GWHCC sees the program as an opportunity to reward these businesses by increasing their exposure in the area. None of these businesses have sufficient capital and/or resources to run advertising campaigns. Their primary form of marketing is thorough word of mouth, flyers, and business cards. The following businesses were direct benefactors of this program:
Café Sureia Bobby's Q Bubba's Muscogee Restaurant Windows Café & Market CAPITAL Construction Group LLC The Chamber encourages you to visit these small businesses and strengthen their owner's entrepreneurial spirit by shopping at these locations. |
